Adventures in Gardening, Kindness of Friends and Strangers Edition
So, it’s been hot here. Like 100 degrees and 100 per cent humidity hot. And it hasn’t rained in about 2 weeks. That doesn’t exactly spell success for a garden. But, my garden is lush and beautiful thanks to both old friends and new.
It’s clear I am a little obsessed with my new hobby, which is pretty standard, but what’s been cool is to see interest from friends I never expected. Two weekends ago, I showed off my little plot to my friends MaryBeth, Robb, their son Will and their 22 year old daughter Allison. Now, every so often I’ll get a text from Allison: “Want me to head over and water the garden?” Amazing.
And then there are the Russians. Anna, Anna, Lianna, and Larissa. The first three are my mom’s age (and older). I cannot beat them to the garden in the morning—they get there at 6 and work hard for an hour. Then, Lianna and Anna 2 watch Anna 1 continue to work from lounge chairs. I love it. I had been lugging my hose back and forth from the car every day, but when Larissa (two plots over) told me their hose had been stolen, I spent about 2 minutes setting up my hose so it would reach her plot and the Annas’. Now, when I get to the garden, I see that not only my plot has been watered, but I may have some new plants. Today, it was beets. I have only known these women for less than two months, but they have brought me immense joy. I am so grateful.
And, I picked my first real tomato today.
